Importance of peace

As with many other transcendent concepts, the definition of peace is as interesting as it is complex. Its importance is sufficiently remarkable to merit more than one possible definition, all of which are considered valid and appropriate for each context.


Thus, if one opts for a positive expression, the most comprehensive meaning of peace is that which considers it with a stable state of balance in the personal and the social. This way of defining peace is analogous to other relevant and difficult concepts, as described with health or well-being. But sometimes it may be simpler to conceive peace in a paradoxically negative sense, that is, as the absence of war or violence. In coincidence, in international treaties it has been postulated that peace is an agreement between areas or nations to terminate a war conflict.

Perhaps the best way to understand the importance of peace is the possibility of applying this concept at the level of individuals and human groups. In the personal sphere, peace involves a state of absence of deleterious feelings and negative feelings, which can be attained from complementary resources such as reason or faith. On the other hand, social peace is the establishment of good relations between human groups or different strata of society. It is not wrong to point out that individual peace seems the most appropriate way to progressively give rise to the installation of social peace, according to the opinion of different philosophers of the most varied cultures.

The importance of peace has motivated those periods of historical stability to have been denominated within the framework of this concept, as has been defined to Pax Romana in the first centuries of the Christian era. Today, many thinkers and intellectuals have emphasized the importance of not forgetting peace as an instrument for the proper coexistence of peoples and nations, with the ultimate aim of the joint progress of humanity in harmony with its environment and environment.
